Elegance is not the prerogative of those who have just escaped from adolescence, but of those who have already taken possession of their future. I always thought what you wore underneath was as important as what you wear on top. You’re only as good as your last collection, which is an enormous pressure. I don’t try to be in fashion; I don’t try to follow trends. You just end up out of fashion that way. Everything I do is a matter of heart, body and soul.

I didn’t want to be a fashion designer, and for a good half of my career I didn’t like it. I always wanted to do other things. Fashion is a very stressful place to work because of the demands of doing the shows – no one expects a writer to produce two books a year on the dot – but it’s also a very toxic place to work.
