Description
First I made a dress because I was pregnant and I wanted to be the most beautiful pregnant woman. Then I made a sweater because I wanted to have one that wasn’t like anyone else’s. I always say: To be well dressed you must be well naked. You have to always work against what you did before, and even against your taste. Design and style should work toward making you look good and feel good without a lot of effort so you can get on with the things that matter. I’m an accomplice to helping women get what they want.
You cannot be creative with people around you. All I did my first year at Vogue was Xerox. Fashion is to please your eye. Shapes and proportions are for your intellect. It pains me physically to see a woman victimized, rendered pathetic, by fashion. You’re only as good as your last collection, which is an enormous pressure.
I’m a fashion designer and people think, what do I know? It is difficult to talk about fashion in the abstract, without a human body before my eyes, without drawings, without a choice of fabric – without a practical or visual reality. When I was young, I lived like an old woman, and when I got old, I had to live like a young person. For me, the summer will be pure gray – mother-of-pearl gray, very pale gray. To me, this is the big statement for summer. Then we have light blue, light turquoise, lots of pink. Delete the negative; accentuate the positive!
